Hurts so good

Tigers' Ball coughs up nothing to Riverside

Cindy Ball felt so rotten, she barely choked down a bagel before the start of Saturday's doubleheader with UC Riverside at Simoni Field.

The University of the Pacific senior was suffering from bronchitis. She coughed and wheezed between pitches yet contributed mightily to the Tigers' sweep with her pitching and hitting.

In game one, Ball hit her 11th home run this season and threw a no-hitter in the Tigers' 10-0 victory in five innings. She then preserved Jennifer Dacre's eighth victory with 11/3 innings of relief in a 5-4 win.

Pacific (32-12, 12-1 Big West) and UC Riverside (10-33, 1-10) will conclude their series at noon today. The 17th-ranked Tigers will play host to first-place and seventh-ranked Cal State Fullerton in an important three-game series beginning Saturday.

''In the second game, I had to sit down a couple of times and put a wet towel on me,'' said Ball, who's 19-8 with five saves and a 0.93 earned-run average. ''You know how it is when you're sick and the sun starts to get to you. I've been resting a lot and taking antibiotics.''

Ball and her teammates hope she's healthy when the Titans come to town.

''We're trying to take it one pitch, one game at a time,'' said Dacre, a sophomore who improved to 8-2. ''We're not overlooking Riverside at all. We'll have some good workouts during the week, and we'll be totally prepared.''

Ball was shaky at the start of the first game. She walked two of the first three hitters, then pitched out of the jam. The Highlanders had one other runner reach second base, as Ball faced three more than the minimum and struck out four.

''I didn't have many strikeouts, so that no-hitter goes to my defense,'' Ball said. ''They got most of my outs.''

Nicole Inouye made two nice running catches in right field, and the Tigers didn't commit any errors. Ball's two-run homer in the first glanced off the top of the fence in left field. One more and she'll tie Carolyn Wilson's single-season school record set in 1996.

Estee Okumura belted Jessica Gandara's next offering over the right-field fence. Okumura's fourth homer this season gave Pacific a 3-0 lead and sent Gandara to the bench.

''The first game spoke for itself,'' said 10th-year Pacific coach Brian Kolze, who was presented with a plaque to honor his 300 career victories before the first game. ''The second game was two games. We won the first half, and they won the second half.''

The Tigers spotted Dacre a five-run lead through two innings on an RBI single by Brandy Thurman, who scored on a wild pitch by UC Riverside starter Monique Baeza. In the second, Barbara Moody cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center.

UC Riverside rallied in the sixth on RBI singles by Karli Burneleit and Kristin Hernandez. Ball entered with two outs and the bases loaded and retired Kiara Burneleit to end the threat. UC Riverside scored an unearned run in the seventh on an error with two outs. Ball struck out Daniella Garcia to end the game.
