49ers Sign Marcel Jackson
San Jose City College Star Inks With The Beach

May 9, 2002

Long Beach, CA--Long Beach State head men's basketball coach Larry Reynolds
announced today that Marcel Jackson has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play
basketball for the 49ers next season. Jackson (F, 6-9, 255) comes to Long Beach
State from San Jose City College. Jackson hails from Santa Cruz, CA and prepped at
Santa Cruz High School.

“We are very happy to have a player of his size and ability”, said Reynolds. “He
comes from a very sound program at San Jose City College and I believe his best
basketball is ahead of him. He gives us size in the paint and he's someone other teams
will have to guard in the post. He will provide a strong presence in defensive
rebounding and I expect him to step in and help us right away.”

Jackson averaged 8.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game last year at
SJCC, while shooting .570 from the field. San Jose finished the season at 24-11 and
tied for second place in the Coast South Conference with an 8-4 mark. They were the
#12 seed in the North Region JC playoffs and defeated Feather River in the first
round, 61-58, before falling to Skyline in the second round, 71-62.

Jackson tallied 18 points and a career-high 24 rebounds on January 18 in an 84-33
win over Gavilan and then had 24 points and 22 rebounds on January 26 in a 73-70
loss to Hartnell. Jackson attended Arizona Western JC in 1999-00 and then sat out a
season before transferring to San Jose CC.
