Big West honors UOP coach, pitcher

The Record

The first of what should be a litany of postseason awards befell Cindy Ball on Tuesday when the Big West Conference named her its pitcher of the year for the second consecutive year.

Tigers' coach Brian Kolze and former Pacific assistant Kristy Schroeder of UC Santa Barbara were named co-coaches of the year. Kolze earned the award for the second consecutive year as well.

Ball led the conference in wins (27), saves (6), strikeouts (273) and innings pitched (264.1) and was second in earned-run average (0.85). She is the Big West's all-time leader in strikeouts with 743, and her strikeouts total this season was the fourth-best in Big West history.

Ball also was a first-team All-Big West selection. She was joined by junior outfielder Barbara Moody, who set Pacific's single-season record for hits with 70. Junior outfielder Estee Okumura, a first-team pick last season, and junior third baseman Brandy Thurman from Tokay High were named to the second team. Freshman shortstop Michelle Anunciation was a honorable-mention selection, and Ball, who hit .355 with 11 home runs and 46 RBI, was on the honorable-mention team as a utility player.

Kolze received his third Big West coach of the year honor. His team lost six seniors, yet won a school-record 21 games in conference and placed second.
