Pacific qualifies again

Tigers sixth in West; next stop: Columbus, Ohio

Record staff, wire reports

The NCAA West Regional had a distinct Stockton flavor Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.

Former Lincoln High School star Ricky Barnes of Arizona tied for the individual title, and University of the Pacific tied for sixth to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin May 29 in Columbus, Ohio.

''We're definitely looking forward to it,'' coach Jason Preeo said.

Led by juniors Ben Scribner and Matt Hansen, the Tigers shot a 1-over-par 289 in the third and final round to jump from a tie for 10th place. Hansen shot a 2-under 70 and Scribner a 72 to finish in a four-way tie for fourth at 1-under 215. Also for Pacific, Tom O'Stasik tied for 34th at 221, Jason Higton shot 231 and Matt Kern 234.

The Tigers made a late charge by combining to shoot 8 under on the last two holes.

''That's about as good as you can do,'' Preeo said.

Barnes went into the final round with a five-shot lead but carded a 73 and finished at 6-under 210 with Justin Smith of Minnesota, who shot a 68.

New Mexico and Minnesota tied for the team title at 872.
