Subject: Observations From Last Two Games

Went to the Utah State and Idaho games. The former was a very physical game and I left it hoping that the Tigers would not have to face Utah State in the Big West tourney before the final round. Pacific struggled at the start of both halves aginst the Aggies, who play tremendous defense.
When Tigers were down by 10 early in the second half, things didn;t look good. Pacific turned up the defense with Jackson and others chasing Aggies' Brown around in a box-and-one. Utah State went cold, Pacific rebounded well and got the ball inside at critical times. At one point in the second half, there were 8 fouls aginst USU and only 1 against UOP. Tiger guards were drawing brush fouls on their opponents while the big men were beating the hell out of each other inside with no calls. Utah State coach deserves credit for molding this fairly new bunch. A rematch will be a tossup. UOP will need better outside shooting. The Tigers took control of the Idaho game early and coasted. Jackson played very well. UOP committed 14 turnovers, way too many against a zone that packed in the inside and gave plenty of three-point opportunities. Because of Northridge's stunning Saturday night win over Utah State, the Tigers are forced to play Northridge and, if they win, Utah State. I'd rather have played Cal Poly, then UC Irvine. But the cards have been dealt. The Tigers will beat Northridge if they handle the pressure and create easy, inside baskets. The Matadors do not play matador defense, however. Should be interesting.
