The other big man redshirt is Miguel Flores out of the Sacramento area. With Newton's commitment our overall number of big men (4) is fine. Johnson is a huge question mark since he's the most familiar with the system, and he still has a great deal of potential if he just would play smart and with confidence. I really liked his upside as a freshman but his reoccuring foot injury really set him back. He never was a gazelle, yet he's quick enough for a big man. He's also the shot blocker we've been missing the past several years. We need to get Newton on a steady diet of creatine phosphate, cheese whiz, 4 x 4's, and Guiness. :) Coach T has made the statement that if Maraker adds a few pounds he could be a poor man's Keith Van Horn, which would be something. Flores is more than likely a project who we hope can give good minutes in his junior and senior years.

I'm still trying to figure out our scholarship situation. Last year we gave out 5 in accordance with the then 5/8, now 5/9 rule. In the fall we gave a ride to Jasko Korajkic (a freshman from Sweden) which I assume goes against last year's total since he's a part of last year's class, yet I don't understand how that doesn't violate the 5/9 rule. We have 7 scholarship seniors this year that finished their eligibility but depending on whether we officially gave 5 or 6 scholarships last year determines if we have one more scholarship to give this year, since we already have 3 commitments. Then there is the issue of Tom Cockle coming back, of which I don't know if he's being asked to walk on or if we're giving him his scholarship back. If we're giving him his scholarship back does that count against our total for the 5/9 rule? The whole thing is very confusing to me, so I've given up and I'm just going to wait patiently until April 10th to see how this whole thing works out. :)

If everything worked out and we did have one more scholarship to give I'd like to see us get a power forward that can rebound like mad. A little further down the message board there is some information on Jonathon Woods a PF out of Chicago by way of Texas. He sounds like a good prospect. I'm sure the coaching staff knows about Justin Bellegarde as well, but I haven't heard anything about him or if he's involved with the Tigers.

By the way, where do you hear about all of these Juco guys? I surf the net fairly religiously, yet I haven't heard of half the guys you seem to know about. Do you care to share any secrets? :)

Thanks for poping over here from time to time. My excursion to some of the alumni events during the Big West Tournament hasn't been fruitful in terms of getting other Tiger fans to discuss Tiger Athletics here. I appreciate your comments and questions.
