you need to watch a little more of the big women's conferences. I've come to the conclusion over the years that women actually tend to play a dirtier brand of basketball than men anyway, and the teams at the highest level also tend to be the worst offenders. I freely admit UCSB isn't afraid to dish it out (or take it; ask Kayte how many bruises she typically has courtesy of opponents' elbows after a game), but try watching a team like Rutgers, Southern Cal, or Purdue some time, or check some of the things that Tennessee players get away with behind the ref's back. Those teams make UCSB look like saints, and I think that's one of the problems we have in the NCAAs--getting adjusted to that physical, high-pressure defensive style again after two months of much gentler Big West teams. Texas physically mauled us in the second half of that game. And actually, Northwestern's former coach a few years ago took time to praise what a clean game we played against them, which should tell you just how rough it gets in the Big Ten. Living here in Lexington I also go to a lot of Kentucky women's games, and there isn't a team in the SEC I've seen come through that isn't as dirty and physical as the best of 'em (or worst, depending on one's perspective). Except LSU that is, because they're always so injury-depleted they can seldom risk mixing it up.
