ODU also proves my point though, because this year's #7 was the lowest seed they've ever carried into the Sweet 16 or beyond. Here's exactly how far they've gone over the years.

32 Team Format
1982--#1 seed, Sweet 16
1983--#2 seed, Final Four
1984--#1 seed, Elite 8
1985--#1 seed, National Title

40 Team Format
1986--DNQ (15-13)
1987--#5 seed, Sweet 16
1988--#6 seed, 2nd Round
1989--#6 seed, 2nd Round

48 Team Format
1990--#8 seed, 2nd Round
1991--DNQ (5-21, what happened??)
1992--#10 seed, Lost 1st Round (This was the only year UCSB has earned a higher NCAA seed than they did)
1993--#7 seed, 2nd Round

64 Team Format
1994--#6 seed, 2nd Round
1995--#8 seed, Lost 1st Round
1996--#2 seed, Sweet 16
1997--#1 seed, Championship Game
1998--#1 seed, Sweet 16
1999--#2 seed, Sweet 16
2000--#4 seed, Sweet 16
2001--#11 seed, Lost 1st Round
2002--#7 seed, Elite 8

Looks like a fairly consistent pattern. When they're good enough to be a 1-4 seed and get home court, they've made Sweet 16 trips. When they're not, except for this year and 1987, they haven't. I don't really see anything atypical about that. Believe me, I'd love for our team to be more like them and get high seeds as often as they do, but we need to be much more consistent about winning our non-conference games if that's ever going to happen. In fact that's what has cost ODU seeding the last two years, they've slipped in the non-conference W-L column. And in 2001 when they got the 11 seed, they even lost a conference game for the first time in about 8 years.

Usually, BTW, you can tell early on how good ODU is going to be in any given season because they have both UConn and Tennessee on their schedule every year. The years they beat one or both of those teams, obviously, are the years to watch out for them (and the years they get their host seeds).

>Pepperdine to what level?

The Sweet 16/Elite 8 level.
