Pacific clobbers Fullerton

By Bob Highfill

Record Staff Writer

University of the Pacific played what head coach Bob Thomason called its best game in conference this season.

The Tigers started and finished strong with no prolonged lapses in between in their 82-48 victory over depleted Cal State Fullerton in front of 3,283 at Spanos Center on Saturday.

Pacific (13-6, 5-4 Big West) is above the .500 mark in conference for the first time since Jan. 12, when it was 3-2. The Tigers beat the Titans (4-14, 1-8) for the sixth consecutive time, and for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings. It was Pacific's largest margin of victory in a Big West game since it beat UC Irvine 96-46 on Feb. 22, 1997.

"I think it was our best game," said Thomason, whose team remains tied for fifth with Cal Poly, an upset winner over conference-leading UC Irvine on Saturday. "We played well against Santa Barbara (on Jan. 12), though we didn't break it open."

Cal State Fullerton had only eight players in uniform, as three players were on the inactive list: forward Josh Fischer stayed behind because of an irregular heartbeat, reserve guard Danny Ryan tended to family matters, and guard David Castleton was academically ineligible.

The short-handed Titans, who played at Cal State Northridge on Thursday, appeared to tire as the game progressed. They abandoned their half-court and full-court trapping defenses, and played zone most of the game. Pacific attempted 23 shots from 3-point range and made nine. Inside the arc, where Fullerton's twin towers patrolled, the Tigers made 21-for-31 (68 percent).

"The way we moved the ball and shot and played defense, it rubs off," Tigers center Mike Preston said. "We were having fun out there."

Almost everyone in a white colored uniform got into the act. The bench accounted for 39 points and 19 rebounds, as 12 Tigers registered points.

Senior reserve forward Eli Kiedrowski from Lodi scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting. His second 3-point shot made it 71-43 with 5:22 left. Backup guard Jono Metzger-Jones scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds, reserve center Ross Mills made 4-of-6 shots and scored nine points, forward Eli Nolan had four rebounds and three assists off the bench, reserve center Tim Johnson scored four points and had three rebounds, and backup guard Bradley Bland made a 3-point shot with two seconds remaining.

"The whole team picked it up,' Kiedrowski said. "We could still get better on defense, but we moved the ball real well and hit the open guy."

Demetrius Jackson led three Tigers in double figures with 13 points. Mike Hahn scored 10 on 5-of-6 shooting.

Cal State Fullerton's big men, 6-foot-11 center Pape Sow and 6-10 forward Babacar Camara, combined for 22 points and 19 rebounds. Camara scored only two points in the second half, and Sow made only 4-of-13 from the floor. He scored seven points at the free throw line.

"Our guards doubled-down on them," Preston said. "Sow is big, long and athletic, and Camara is the same kind of player. We tried to keep it out of their hands as much as possible."

Sow led his team with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers shot 56 percent in the first half and led 40-26 at the break. They broke the game open with a 12-0 run in a five-minute stretch that made it 64-37 with 8:06 left.

Pacific will play only one game next week. Cal State Northridge (8-10, 7-2), who beat the Tigers 70-59 on Jan. 5 in Northridge, will make its first Spanos Center appearance at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

"That's going to be a donnybrook because Northridge likes to come at you and play up and down," Thomason said. "That's going to be a big game for us, and I hope a lot of people come out."
