Pacific humbles Northridge

The Record

Sherri Murrell better make sure she labels the tapes.

Otherwise, she'd be hard pressed to distinguish her University of the Pacific basketball team's 92-60 win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday in Northridge from the nearly identical win by her Tigers over the Matadors four days earlier at Spanos Center.

"We still played great defense, were down in rebounding in the first half and came out and beat them on the boards in the second half," Murrell said after her team's Big West Conference win improved its record to 12-8 and 7-2.

And just as in Wednesday's 90-51 victory, many players had a lot to do with the scoring.

Vanessa Dupont led five players in double figures with 18 points. Ahshalic Johnson scored 16, Gillian d'Hondt 14, Andrea Nederostek 13 and Selena Ho 12. Dupont and Nederostek led the rebounding effort with seven apiece as the Tigers outrebounded Cal State Northridge 48-34.

"We had different people in there, and they all looked great," Murrell said. "They really played hard for 40 minutes. The subs played hard."

Playing a team so soon after beating it in a rout isn't easy.

"Last year, we beat Cal Poly by 27 at home, then lost to them in the Big West Tournament," Murrell recalled. "We were a little concerned they'd overlook them. But this means the kids are not overlooking any opponent. They're not relaxing. They're playing the best they can."

Pacific dominated from the start and led by 29 in the first half. Cal State Northridge (1-18, 1-8) didn't hit double figures until the 6:07 mark when a free throw by Kameelah Purdom made it 33-10. Pacific led 46-21 at the half.

The Tigers steadily built their advantage in the second half, leading by 36 three times.
