Tigers tame Mustangs

The University of the Pacific women's basketball team was in control during Sunday's Big West Conference game against visiting Cal Poly, but had a tough time putting away the Mustangs.

Cal Poly was within five points several times in the final few minutes but never caught up, as the Tigers triumphed 80-73 Sunday at Spanos Center.

"They stayed in the game because they had some offensive boards, not because of their execution," Pacific coach Sherri Murrell said. "We executed well offensively, and 80 points is a lot."

Senior guard Selena Ho scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (13-9, 8-3 Big West), making 3-of-4 3-pointers. The Tigers' inside game was also a factor, with 6-foot-3 sophomore center Gillian d'Hondt scoring 15 points, and 6-foot-1 junior center Vanessa Dupont coming off the bench to score 16.

Dolinda Meeker also had a fine effort with 12 points, and four assists for Pacific. This was the fourth time this year that Pacific had four players in double figures in a game.

Despite the win, the Mustangs (7-14, 4-7) frustrated the Tigers with their 41-37 rebounding advantage.

"Our team as a whole played well, but if we're going to go where we want to be, we need to crash the boards," said Ho.

"I thought we attacked well offensively ... but you can't fall asleep (against Cal Poly)," said d'Hondt, who led the Tigers with nine rebounds.

Dupont, who also had five rebounds, said, "I just tried to pick up the ball as much as I could. Cal Poly is a scrappy team, and you have to be on your toes. Nothing was given to us (Sunday)."

Kari Duperron was Cal Poly's leading scorer with 13 points, and backup guard Michelle Henke scored 12..

Pacific used a 17-2 run to take a 25-12 lead with 9:08 to go in the first half. Ho fired off a 3-pointer to start the run, and Dupont scored six points during the spurt.

Pacific had its biggest lead of the game, 36-21, after Ho scored on a fast-break layup on Jakehima Mercier's assist with four minutes left in the first half. The Tigers led at the break 42-32.
