UOP tennis teams need wins at Big West tournament

By Tony Acosta

Record Staff Writer

In order to make the NCAA Division I Tournament, the University of the Pacific men's and women's tennis teams have one goal -- win the Big West Conference Tournament, which starts today in Ojai. And it's not going to be easy.

The men's team, 11-7 on the season, played its final two regular season matches without the services of its No. 1 singles player, Dietrich Haug, who has had a nagging right shoulder injury. The women's team, which has been bitten by the injury bug since the preseason, has had a problem not only with injuries but depth, as well.

The third-seeded Tigers men's team begin the Big West Tournament today when it faces Utah State at 8 a.m. If successful, Pacific will play against No. 2 seed UC Irvine on Friday.

Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded Pacific women (8-10) are scheduled to take on fourth-seeded Idaho on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Both Pacific teams are hopeful about their chances, but are realistic at the same time.

Pacific men's coach Guido Baumann said, "(Haug) didn't play our last two matches, and we had a bad loss to Sacramento State. We'll just have to see what happens. But in order to make the NCAA Tournament, we have to win (at Ojai)."

Scott Howard, Pacific's first-year women's coach, said, "We've been hampered by injuries, but I hope we'll be able to peak at the tournament. We've tried to give the girls some rest, but we've had a problem with numbers this year."

Haug, a senior from Germany, has been taking some anti-inflammatory medicine, but he won't know how he feels until he actually steps on the court.

"I'm hoping to play on Friday (against second-seed UC Irvine), if we win Thursday; I think we'll have a good chance (against Utah State)," Haug said.

On winning the Big West, Haug said, "I think we have a good shot; it's going to be either (top-seed) UC Santa Barbara or us. We lost to UCSB 5-2 the first time, so we know what to expect."

The Tiger women will be led by No. 1 singles player Susanne Bertel, like Haug a senior and a native of Germany. Bertel has been a consistent performer since she was a freshman and has a 15-3 record this season.

"I'm just having a lot of fun this year," Bertel said. "I've always had fun, but this is my last season, and I want to make it a good one. Our practices have been good, and we've done a lot of conditioning in the weight room."

The Tigers have had some injury problems, with Jaimee Bremner sporting an ailing right shoulder and Urska Dvorsek a back injury, but should field a full team on Friday.
