Tigers sweep doubleheader

The Record

University of the Pacific's softball team isn't going to give up its grip on first place in the Big West Conference easily.

The 17th-ranked Tigers swept Long Beach State 3-0 and 5-1 on Saturday in Long Beach to move to 38-13 and 18-2 with four conference games remaining.

Pacific backed Cindy Ball's two-hit shutout in the first game by scoring once in the first and twice in the third, then took advantage of five Long Beach errors to score four unearned runs in game 2.

"We're just finding a way to get it done in every game," coach Brian Kolze said. "In the first game we had timely hitting and Cindy's just pitching lights out. In the second game we put the ball in play and capitalized on their mistakes."

Sophomore Jennifer Dacre followed her shutout win over Fullerton with seven solid innings of four-hit ball.

The one run she allowed came on a bloop double by Christian Zepecia and seeing-eye single by Natalie Walker. But that came in the third to tie the game at 1-1 and the Tigers answered with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth on Estee Okumura's home run and one in the seventh.

Ball, who was named Big West pitcher of the week for the second week in a row on Monday, improved to 23-9 as she struck out nine and allowed two hits.

Okumura singled in a run in the first after two were out, then, in the third, scored twice on Brandy Thurman's RBI single and Barbara Moody's run-scoring double.
