In reply to: SC 's message, "Iaa football football conference?" on 21:54:46 05/01/02 Wed

People have been talking about this on the Sac State fan site, mentioning that this may be forced with new rules for being at full D-I status. Some programs will be forced to revert to I-AA status. Some big time programs (as yet unnamed) are pushing this. Some bigwigs mentioned UOP. But, as SC says, it is far fetched, for the following reasons (some evident, some my humble opinion),

1. St. Mary's is a team of cheap-shotting yahoos. Who wants to deal with that?

2. Davis is more than content to stay at the D-II level, flaming out in the semifinals every year.

3. The schollie level would have to be high to attract UNR and SJSU, which would essentially kill the idea for teams like St. Mary's and Davis.

4. We've already done the Sac-Southern Utah bit. Sac kicked their tail for a conference championship in the course of going 4-6. We don't want them.

5. The Cow Poly thing has also been done. They suck so bad now, they may be about ready to go the way of Northridge: gone.

6. Those are the breaks of a regional conference that would mainly be in the context of CA. If UOP wants football on a I-AA level, I really think the best way to go would be the Big Sky Conference. It's already established. The farthest we would have to go is Montana. We would rekindle the rivalry with an up-and-coming Sac squad (last year's 2-9 is an aberration, I believe). And, as a conference that was rated higher than the Big West in football anyway, it's on the cusp of going I-A, even with the new restrictions. For I-AA football, the Sky is the way to go if we want football back.

That said, however, with the present administration, I don't think it will happen. Dumb De Rosa is far too happy raking in the dough that the 49'ers bring in, to the exclusion of anything other than high school ball. Did you know that he nixed a proposed Sac-Grambling rematch of the Junior Rose Bowl to be held in Stagg Stadium this fall? Just think of the money that would have brought in to restart the Tigers!
