Subject: Greetings

Hi everyone,

I'm glad if you still remember me. I was the Indonesian Chinese student of UWYO, majoring in Music (especially in Piano Performance). Well, it's a pity though of my resignation from UWYO. Nevertheless, I've never regretted, as everything is in God's plan, and I believe firmly who holds my life, my hands and my future.

Since returning back to Singapore (December 16th 2003- April 16th 2004), I've tried to apply for a right to be a Permanent Resident in Singapore. I've worked for 4 months as a piano teacher in a small and newly built music school, which was a tiring, boring and dull job for me. Indeed, I love to teach piano. However, firstly, 95% of my students were beginners and children of 5th and 6th age. Moreover, I was not allowed to have my own time (in other words, I had to stay whole day long there everyday. Then, I was not allowed to go to my usual church to worship (which is Dr. Stephen Tong's Reformed Evangelical Church of Singapore). I had to go together with the boss' church and went home together with him. The worst thing was that my salary was only S$200 for teaching 15 students every month. Can you imagine? However, as I think back, I have to give thanks to the Lord, for there will be a period of test for me to face kinds of troubles and problems, see whether if I could cope or not.

Well, after knowing that my PR-application was unsuccessful, I decided to go back to Indonesia. I was extremely shocked that my house, which I used to live in it for 6 years, was empty. My piano, best-loved radio, 2 sets of sofas, study desk, all were gone. Moreover, every single piece of houseware appliances (such as a water filter, washing machine, 7 sets of @Fissler@ press-cookers + tea sets + 1 big box of knives set, mixer, 2 cooking pans), all were gone! Then, my dad's debts of 200 million rupiahs, had not been paid. I wept for 3 days and continually praying to the Lord for giving us ways to solve those huge problems. Praise the Lord, as 2 of my mum's insurance periods had ended, and she could take away the whole amount of money. Moreover, from the 3 times of my solo recital (which were given in total sums of 8 million rupiahs), had covered 95% of the debts. Then, from my working salary from August 'till September (at 2 famous bible colleges in Indonesia), could fulfill the total payment of the debts. Thanks be to God!

Those problems listed above caused the sickness of my mum. Her heart has problems, too. Sometimes she feels the terrible pain in her heart, and sometimes she had horrifying headaches. I could never stopped from praying and crying God for His mercy and healing power. Thus, I and my mom have decided to study theology at Dr. Stephen Tong's Jakarta High School of Theology and Music School (in which I'm teaching, too) from January 2005 onwards.

As I've mentioned, that I'm teaching at 2 Schools of Theology (or Bible Colleges) as a music instructor of Music Appreciation, Western Music History, and Form & Analysis classes. Moreover, at Reformed, I'm currently teaching 3 students, who have passed Grade 8 London Royal ABRSM Theory and Practical Piano Examinations. But, at another Bible College, I have 28 (24 beginners and 4 Advanced) students in Bandung. Therefore, I have to run Jakarta-Bandung every 2 weeks (1 week in Jakarta and 1 week in Bandung). Although it's a tiring job, I feel full of joy, as I'm serving God and giving my best to glorify Him.

Well, actually I have 2 ideals, which I've waited since my youth:

1) to have a chance to pursue my music study in either
Germany or Vienna.

2) to compose glorious hymns and church music for God
(just as Handel's @Messiah@, Haydn's @The Creation@,
and Mendelssohn's @Elijah@).

Therefore, please pray for me, so that my dreams will come true and may His Holy Name be glorified through my study and musical compositions.

Well, before ending my letter, let me wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Thank you very much. May God, our Heavenly Father bless you all! See you!

Yours truly friend,
Joseph Himawan
