Very interesting conversation, Sugar. Your friend seems cool and I like the way you stated your beliefs on how the D/A ship worked. I thought it was interesting that you brought up the common-law marriage argument with D/A. I've always felt that when Angel got his soul, it was like a divorce or when a woman catches her husband cheating on her and decides to drop her unfaithful husband. Unfortunately, with D/A, the divorce (ensoulment) was not mutual, which causes them to have their relationship hang in limbo until Angel meets up with darla again in 1997. Those two have never had a mutual parting-of-ways. I wonder how the dance between Darla and Angel changes in the next three eps with the baby on the way.

What has fascinated me about the D/A ship is its twists and turns. It has never flowed in a straight line, such as Darla makes Angel, Angel is her faithful lover. No, we get the early period of their relationship, where everything was very new and the loyalty between them was easily shaken (see The Trial flashback) and a later period (just before ensoulment) where Darla asks Angel if there was someone else (5x5), it's almost as if they have settled into a comfortable groove where loyalty and respect was a given.

I'm most likely reaching on that last part, but I can't help thinking of that scene in "Darla" where Angel sneaks up from behind her in the Boxer Rebellion and asks wgere Spike and Dru were located. The scene reeked of the ex-husband trying to get back into his ex-wife's good graces and asks if the children were there to listen in on the conversation. I wonder if Darla ever sat Spike and Dru down and told them about Angel's ensoulment.

If you look back onto BtVS Season 1 and Angel Season 2, the Darla/Angel relationship has been given a radical and probably much-needed face-life. Darla could be easily dispatched in BtVS Season 1, because a) she was a throw-away character, b) the writers wanted to pump up the B/A ship, and c) she was pretty much played as jealous ex-girlfriend, the kind that a new girlfriend can wipe away in an instant.

This time around, Darla's the ex-wife, and I don't think that kind of position is something that can be wiped/staked away. I believe that the ex-wife portrayal of Darla for AtS is something that Angel is going to have to learn to live with and confront head on, by at least talking about the situation.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that that was an interesting conversation you just printed up and I am seriously wondering where people get the idea that Darla's a slut. if any character has been shown to be trampy, it is Dru with her treatment of Spike. Dru's been making out with chaos demons and running to Spike everytime her "Daddy" doesn't treat her the way she likes. Darla, on the other hand, has been pretty obvious with her disinterest in Lindsey (see Reprise, she is seated on his couch, not his bed, a sign of non-intimacy) and very obvious in her desire for Angel and only Angel has it been shown that she had physical, on-screen sex. I'm pretty much preaching to the choir here, but it always annoys me when people call Darla a "ho" when she has never acted that out, except when she was human the first time around and even then we don't know if going into prostitution was even her choice.
