I didn't see your message here until today...I thought we were still talking about Coyotyl's computer problems!

You'd be welcome to swing through here on your way to whatever prettier spot you're looking at (we've got a nice neighborhood...but not quite coastal...).

Depends on what you're looking for as to where to go...although you could see a bit of all of it depending on how much time you have. South of Portland to New Hampshire is where most of the beach areas are. As you cross the border you hit these places on your way to Portland:

1. Kittery. Outlet mall heaven/hell. Not pictoresque...just a buncha strip malls. But you (I mean K) can shop.

2. The Yorks. This area is real pretty (and can be pricey). A ton of summer residents chillin' on the beach. A series of small towns (various Yorks). More for a real quiet and relaxing time.

3. Ogonquit. Same type area as the Yorks, but more to do. More shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. Families and lotsa gay folks...but not the Queer Nation type.

4. Wells. Same as Ogonquit but not quite as hoity toity and not as gay.

5. Old Orchard Beach. Kinda like the Gatlinburg of Maine. Also known as the Canadian Riviera (lotsa Frogs from Montreal, eh?). Fantastic beach, boardwalk with arcades, pier fries, cotton candy, pizza, hot dogs, mini-amusement park etc. We stayed there for a family thing and it was actually quite nice. There are some real dives though, so watch where you stay. The place we stayed at was either new or recently redone and a pretty good deal. Fun, but don't expect quiet relaxation and gourmet meals. Only about 15 miles or so south of Portland.

6. Portland. What can I say? The Shark family resides here, so it must be cool. ok...be quiet....Actually, a decent amount to see and do in the area. And you'd be welcome to crash. Everything from restaurants, islands, parks, etc.

7. Freeport. Outlet shopping heaven (no hell this time). Only 20 miles north of Portland, the town has kept a good chunk of it's character while incorporating big name stores into their original town buildings. Home of LL Bean.

8. Boothbay Harbor. Nice small resort town on the coast. Hour or so north of Portland.

9. Camden. Gorgeous town on the coast...small mountains behind it...about 2 1/2 hours from Portland. Laura and I got engaged there. Lotsa boutique type shops, restaurants, hiking, sailing, etc.

10. Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. Haven't made it up yet, but plan to this summer. Supposed to be absolutely spectacular.

That about takes you up the coast...cool stuff in the interior too if you're interested. Sebago Lake is only about 30 miles from Portland (up to 60 miles away at the top) and is a really nice huge lake. Lots of cabins, beds and breakfast, inns, etc. If you really want to see the interior, head up towards Moosehead Lake or Rangely Lake. You can get some real nice cabins up there, whitewater rafting, hiking, ATV, etc.

Hope my travelogue helps...the summers really are gorgeous up here...warm without being too humid...lots of sun...ocean, mountain...pretty cool.
