“Hostility towards Irish Republicans seems to be a University of Ulster phenomenon” says Briege Meehan Sinn Fein.

Press Release: 19th November 2002.

According to Newtownabbey Sinn Fein councillor Briege Meehan “University of Ulster administrators” issued instructions to the University security personnel to forcibly remove members of Sinn Fein from the Students union complex at Jordanstown today.

Mrs Meehan said, “Sinn Fein were invited to the University at the request of the Students’ Union.”

Meehan continuing said, “It remains my clearest understanding that all political parties received similar open invitations from the Jordanstown Students. Therefore, I am deeply perplexed by this University decision to remove Sinn Fein and only Sinn Fein. I am also concerned that this University staff intervention and action, for whatever their reasoning into the autonomous affairs of the University of Ulster students’ union seriously undermines and indeed questions the self governing authority of the entire student movement not only at the University of Ulster but also throughout Ireland.”

Meehan said, “The other political parties were treated as guests and they were actually encouraged to freely promote political education and awareness among the 13000 students at the UUJ campus. But in comparison, when the invited guests at UUJ are Sinn Fein members, they are treated in a hostile and highly intimidating manner by the University security and then ordered off the premises. This is undoubtedly a blatant distinction that flaunts any civilised or indeed educated notion of equality.”

Meehan continuing said, “ I have been contacted by Sinn Fein voters, who either attend or work at the University and they have told me they are disgusted by the University of Ulster’s response each time Irish republicans enter or attempt to enter this University. Because, a similar state of affairs developed at the Magee Campus in relation to The 1981 Hunger Strike exhibition. But this exhibition was not a difficulty for QUB and only recently, my husband; Martin was the invited guest speaker at a seminar at QUB and he was not forcibly removed from this university. So hostility towards Irish Republicans seems to be a UU phenomenon that is not replicated at QUB or any other university on the planet.”

Meehan Concluding said, “I intend to take this matter all the way.”
