The fate of the swimming pool facilities at the University of Ulster is in the balance as an appeal to their closure was heard on the Jordanstown campus.

At the hearing, witnesses called by the Save Our Pools Committee and by the university, gave evidence relating to the closure and the manner in which the decision to close the pools was taken last summer.

The appeal was conducted by University Visitor Sir Ronald Weatherup, whose office students can turn to when all other complaints procedures have been exhausted.
Campaigners argued that the university did not consult with the pools' users about the closure of the swimming, diving and hydrotherapy pools last August.

Prof Jim Allen, Pro Vice Chancellor for student support, admitted that he had not consulted with the pools' users about the closure.

Physiotherapist Isobel Fleming, giving evidence, drew the Visitor's attention to five of her patients whose medical conditions have deteriorated since the closure of the hydrotherapy pool.

Paul Girvan, local MLA, also gave evidence, and spoke candidly of the "arrogant approach" the university adopted in its negotiations with the borough council.

The university argued that the pools were not financially viable and were underused. To this, the Hon. Secretary of Larne Swimming Club, Peter Watson, said that his club had asked to book extra pool sessions and pay greater user charges, but that request had been refused by the university.
