Learn lesson of cabin hill

Recommendations made in a report on the Cabin Hill sex scandal should be introduced immediately, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission said today.

The damning report released earlier this week criticised the Belfast school's handling of incidents of abuse carried out by a 13-year-old pupil on at least six younger pupils in the 1992/93 academic year.

The commission said that hopefully as a result of the case schools and education authorities will be better equipped to prevent such incidents in the future.

It also said that the board of governors in all schools should immediately review how they can more effectively safeguard the welfare of pupils.

NIHRC chief commissioner professor Brice Dickson added that the Department of Education should also issue advice for schools on handling retrospective complaints about abuse.
