The level of anti-social behaviour in the Holylands area of south Belfast has reached unacceptable levels but the universities are making headway in tackling the problem, it was claimed today.

Deputy leader of the SDLP, Alasdair McDonnell, spoke out against the "truly scandalous" situation facing residents in the beleaguered area.

His comments came following revelations that 270 complaints have been made about drunken student antics since September.

While police patrols have been stepped up in the Holylands area - where 80% of properties have been converted into Homes of Multi-Occupancy (HMOs) - Queen's University confirmed that it is currently dealing with 60 disciplinary cases.

The University of Ulster is processing 109.

Police said that since the start of the new term 11 days ago there have been six arrests, 38 warnings and 15 drink-related incidents reported to Belfast City Council.

Dr McDonnell, an Assemblyman for south Belfast, said: "This total of 270 complaints in a six-month period is an unacceptably high number.

"It's a truly scandalous situation that hundreds of Holylands residents have had their lives made unbearable by a minority of badly behaved students.

"However, movement has been made by the two universities to deal with the problems in the area."

Late last year Queen's introduced a new disciplinary code to deal with off-campus behaviour following trouble between students and residents in the Holylands area.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Gerry McCormac said: "We haven't expelled or suspended anyone but I don't know what will happen when the disciplinary cases work their way through."

"I want to see this happening as fast as possible but at the same time I want it to be fair.

"We have to make sure that it is those who have perpetrated the anti-social behaviour that are punished."
