The Indian community in the Caribbean were introduced as Indentured Workers by the British as slavery declined due to its abolition.

The majority of Indians came from the Southern regions of India, the most popular recruiting grounds were Cochin and Madras. In Guyana [prev British Guiana] their religious and cultural customs were retained other than language.

Guyana has six races and there is a poor relationship between them. Particularly strange is that the religions followed are not cause for any hate campaigns.

Politically, elections are won on race and with the current racial divisions one can see that unless the votes are won on actual political issues, rather than ethnic origins, the countries democratic system will never be anything other than unfair for the ethnic division with the least voters.

I have been to Guyana and on my first trip there I was shown Shakira Baksh's house. It was uninhabited.

I understand that Shakira Baksh actually runs a restaurant in Chelsea, London called 'The Canteen'. I don't suppose she lives in the flat above the shop though.

Hope of interest to any who read.

Paul
