Hmm... from what I understand, they are elves or faeries that have been substituted for a human child... The elf or faerie takes a human baby as their own and puts one of their own children in the crib in it's place. I'm not sure but I think either of the substitues (elf or human ) can be called a changeling.
In the case of the elf or faerie baby, they are raised by humans, and possess the elf or faerie gifts, but the human lifestyle and vice versa. I believe the character stems out of Irish, Scottish or Welsh legend..
From what I've read, the elves being raised with humans may be mistreated somewhat, obviously because the parents are mad that their own child had been stolen.

That is my view...It may be different according to Morgan.
