Yes, "boomers" is slang for a kangaroo. There are no kangaroos in N.C. being sold in the pet trade, as far as I know.Also slang for the offspring of wartime brides, a la "baby boomers" or "boomers", and I doubt that these are the animals for sale too.

So this leaves us with, as I stated previously, red squirrels. "Boomers" is a nickname for red squirrels, as I previously stated. I don't undertand why the problem with it. I have heard them called boomers before. No mystery there.

They look a hell of a lot more like a North American flying squirrel than a baby boomer or a kangaroo.

And the Mount Graham red squirrel is on the US Endangered Species list.
