I haven't watch this movie in HK before. Opposite to your, I like Cinema Paradiso much more than this one, that may be the difference in personal feeling.

Yes, this movie is quite funny. When the old man was finding his eldest son, a prostitute try to tempt him :
Prostitute: Hey, papa, look at my leg.
The old man pull his pant.
Old man:Look at mine!
Then, they laughed together.

It's no doubt that Marcello Mastroianni played well, and he didn't disappoint us. However, to the director, I feels a little bit of it. The tone is too smooth. Finding the children-Having problem(be robbed)- Being cheated by the children-know the truth-left- papa sick-reunion-wife has died.I think the tone is too.........formal

Also, I would like to mention about a scene in this movie. When the old man found his youngest son, he brought this old man to the top of the house and showed the special effect he invented. This scene recall another similar scene in the Hong Kong Fighting movie "Storm and Cloud". Ekin Cheung bring the girl to a place where full of night lighting inserts. So ironic I think.
