Subject: 928GTS vin# question

Hi everybody, I'm a newbie planning on taking a look at a 928GTS at a dealer tomorrow. It is listed as a 1994 model and has the vin# listed as WP0AA2927RS820160. Now, Phil's fabulous website (an invaluable source of info, Phil!) states that vin#s for 1994 are of the following form: WPOAB292xRS820001-0199. Since there is the obvious difference of "AA" instead of "AB" there could be one of two solutions: (a) Phil's data is faulty (unlikely); (b) the car in question is actually a 1993 model (auto transmission). I can certainly check the engine serial # (where is that, by the way?).

If it turns out to be a 1993 instead of a 1994, does this matter? Is it merely an indication of the dealer being ignorant of this minor detail (it is not a Porsche dealer) rather than trying to pull a quick one? Could it be a 1993 model which was sold as a 1994 model? If so, are there any significant differences between the 1993 and 1994 models?

Lastly, does anyone have recommendations for 928 mechanics in Connecticut to do an inspection for me, if it goes that far?

Thanks!

Rod
