Subject: ENGINE CLEANING & REFURB - DETAILED
In reply to: Steve 's message, "Engine cleaning" on 12:15:14 11/19/01 Mon

ENGINE DETAILING:

See this site especially for engine cleaning techniques: http://www.carcareonline.com

FOR LASTING SHINE ON FLEXIBLE, AND OTHER SURFACES:

Thom’s personal unorthodox technique: Coastal, Ignition Wire Sealer, from Auto Zone works to shine wires, hoses, rubber, plastic, metal, firewall, etc. Everything must be clean first. Hoses can also be turned blacker by CD2 Engine Detailer, Armorall, etc., then buffed to dry before sealing. Those products will wear off quickly if not sealed.

TO REFURBISH EARLIER 928 SMOOTH INTAKES, see Aluminum Wheel Polishing:
Aluminum Wheel Polishing:

For periodic maintenance, I go to the self serve car wash. Pre-treat wash, high pressure wash, brush, rinse. After it dries, I use Duragloss 870 Aluminum Polish. It contains felt that you tear off, and rub onto the wheel. Remove with towel. Buff with polishing wheel, or buffing wheel attached to a drill. Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish is good, but it requires more towels.

For major renovation, I used various abrasives including scotch brite, and sandpaper. I don’t recall the grades, but fine, then extra fine is safe enough. Use medium or course grade as first step for deep gashes. I did most of mine by hand, but a palm sander, or rotating disk will speed up the process. Just don’t create gouges that will take too long to blend back in. Then, proceed to the dry phase above.

I did the above to the wheel crests. Next, I painted like the original. I used a dental pick to get the fine edges right down to the horse’s hoof. Painted it with clear aerosol enamel.

TO REFURBISH LATER 928 ROUGH INTAKE FORGINGS THAT WERE ORIGINALLY PAINTED:

Here is what I did to my intakes and valve covers:
High Pressure Car Wash Hand Held Wand Wash and Rinse(Wash)
Dry
Kleen Strip – Aircraft Remover
High Pressure Car Wash Hand Held Wand Rinse(Rinse)
Bake in oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes
Wipe clean
Bake in oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes
Wipe clean
Dupont Aluminum Prefinishing System Step A 225S
Rinse
Dry
Within 5 hours
Plastikote Engine Enamel Primer
Bake in oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes, repeat
Plastikote Engine Enamel
Bake in oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes, repeat
Plastikote Engine Enamel Clear
Bake in oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes, repeat

NOTES:
I did mine myself in gold and black with aerosol cans. It took forever. The only thing I was unhappy with was my lettering. I smudged some black onto the gold, repainted the gold with a brush. The repaint was not as smooth as the previous aerosol application. Otherwise, it looks fantastic.
Klean Strip Aircraft Preps – Prep-All works as final prep for painting most anything. Brake and Parts Cleaner can cut through grease. But, rinse afterward especially rubber and plastic parts.
Mineral spirits at $2/gallon helps to cut grease, and not harm parts.
Body Putty can be used on aluminum.
I don't know about factory paint availability. My impression is that Porsche will only release that to the dealers.

TO HAVE SOMEONE ELSE TO REFINISH INTAKES:

For a professional job see:
http://members.rennlist.com/mechanic/index.html
Dave Schaeffer will do a marvelous job, I am sure.

PLATING:

Another guy found this source for plating: I found a good plating source local to me, but that doesn't help out the rest of you folks. This place does, however, have a good website with lots of plating information. And they will still do Cadmium. (You're right Thom, Cadmium is now out of favor because of the environmentally unfriendly heavy metals used in the process.) They put all the stuff in a big drum and the entire process is automated. Worth a look:

Here is another plater: http://www.generalgalvanizing.com/services/
The Eastwood company has a Cadmium kit: http://www.eastwoodcompany.com/cgi-bin/sgdynamo.exe?HTNAME=default2.htm
Note: It might be easier, and better looking to replace all hose clamps, rather than to plate them. The big 3 can supply stainless replacements. Hardware stores have hose clamps, but some do not look European.

WARNING, OLD RUBBER LEAKS:

Many engine rubber hoses, sleeves, elbows, etc. will no longer seal. They may have cracked or formed a stiffened shape. Replace rubber.

HOOD INSULATION:

Get the original Porsche hood insulation. Some after market look alike is cut off center. Remove old foam with a shop vacuum.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

Greg Nichols tips page has some coverage - big surprise, eh? See: http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm

HTH,
Good luck,
Thom Ross
