My preference is to go with maximum liability coverage and an umbrella that ups the liability coverage (like Dave) and no collision or comprehensive (like Art). Insurance is intended to protect you from events you cannot personally afford. The car itself is not worth enough to insure.

Those rates sound very high. You should shop around. I only pay a little over $200/year here in usually expensive California for max liability with State Farm, but I'm over 50, etc. The umbrella is $300/year and is recommended if you have a nestegg you should to protect.
