Subject: Polish, but don't chrome plate ...
In reply to: Jerry 87 928S4 's message, "Polishing Wheels Question" on 18:48:14 11/21/01 Wed

Hi Jerry,

Any aluminum surface can be polished to a chrome-like shine. For your wheels to be polished, first the paint would have to be removed which requires a process that could compromise the integrity of the wheel somewhat (some sort of media blasting would be rquired). Then the surface would be sanded down with 1,000 grit, and then rubbed and polished out. There are companies that would do that to your wheels for you for I think about $200 per wheel.

Also, some companies will chrome plate aluminum wheels but most consider that this process really compromises the integrity and strength of the wheel.

It's okay to polish your wheels, just make sure the place you choose to do it for you knows what they're doing when it comes to removing the paint.
