Subject: Miles per gallon meter

My 1982 928 miles per gallon meter started reading low. It works OK at idle but reads low off the scale during most driving. Only when decelerating does it return to normal range. The gas mileage of the car seems OK. Is there an adjustment somewhere to make it read higher?
