Subject: Timing Belt Damage

The engine of my S4 1987 suddenly lost all compression. A quick first inspection learned that the timing belt lost most of his teeth. We found them at the bottom. The belt had only 45.000 km. What the hell went wrong? And what can be the damage to the engine?
