I can see how it could appear that way in some cases. However, no team is ever awarded a point for missing a field goal. If the offensive (kicking) team puts the ball in the defensive (recieving) team's endzone, and does not allow the recieving team to get the ball back across the goal line, they're awarded a single point. The same applies to punts, as well as to field goal attempts.

If you caught the most recent Grey Cup Game, you'll remember that there was one instance where Winnipeg hit the upright on an attempted field goal. In this case, the ball was ruled dead. This was a missed field goal, and no point was awarded. Likewise, if the field goal attempt is missed short, and the ball does not enter the endzone, no point would be awarded, unless the player who received the kick retreated into the endzone and did not come back out (this would be a two-point safety). Essentially, a team is not being awarded a point for missing the field goal, but for what happens after the field goal attempt is unsuccessful.
