Which means there is NO military option extant, as was in te same in the past in Georgia when te admin was W-Cheney-Condy Rice, nor Hungary when Ike made threats he could not keep, nor the Prague Spring of 1968 for then still Czecheslovakia, nor the Solidarity Union uprisings in Poland. In all cases we had to exercise lesser options and history proved to be on our side in the long run. Even in the Cuban standoff, Cuba's missles were dismantled, the Russian ships went home, but in a secret deal, we removed our missles from Turkey. We wanted nyet missles next door, so did the Commies.

So that pretty much leaves us with economic, political and diplomatic responses only. With an option to support the pro-Western factions, or should I say the pro-Ukranian factions in their quest to be an independant whole nation.
So financial and covert support are also on the table, to the extent that it can be effective. The West's military support in the form of shoulder missles to Afghan rebels may
well have been decisive in their war against the Soviets. But the final result was Talliban triumph and then 9-11, 20 years later.

So i favor our admin taking whatever resonable steps they can to favor the good guys, with an eye to what is the long run. The iron curtain fell, Eastern Europe threw off Soviet domination, and USA fired not one shot to do this. I don't think Russia can deal well with economic sanctions, they are not a rich nation.

It would be nice if the opposition party in USA, the GOP, would join the American side and stop excusing Russian militarism by placing the blame on President Obama. The ability of today's GOP to forget way way back to 2008 (!!) and erase Georgia from collective memory is breath taking. Or posting that im 2008, the then junior senator from Illinois set American policy!!!! Fucking unreal!

Can USA play the kind of deft hand such that Russia will yield to the will of everybdy else? I don't know.

I do know that we have an anti-Chavez-Maduro revolt in Venezuela right now, and that deserves our attention also.
Again, our actual options may be limited, but we need to try to keep history on the same course that collpased the USSR and saw Mao become a hollow figurehead in today's pseudo-communist, profit-mad, fast developing China.

The way forward is not war, that is the way backward.
