There's a bike event here called the MS150. It's a 150 mile bike ride in the mountains over a weekend, and the entry fee is, as of a couple of years ago, $1,500 in donations.
The people I know who ride it, do it because they like the ride. The fundraising is seen as a necessary burden in order to ride. But, that doesn't take away from the fact that this is what the MS society needs to do to fundraise.
