: A Sense of Foreboding

Almost two weeks ago in a disaster unprecedented in our nation's history, approximately 7,000 people were killed senselessly, most of them American citizens, but also others from around the globe. At first we were horrified....glued to the images flickering from our television screens, replayed again and again, but unable to turn away....attempting to come to terms with what had happened. After the horror came the fear...what if "they" were not finished yet...what if there was more to come? Then we mourned...and we gave...we gave our blood, our funds, our sympathies, our prayers....we displayed our patriotism by waving and flying flags....and we rallied around our president. Then the need for justice set in....and for some it was revenge....we wanted someone to PAY for what had been done...for someone to be held accountable for this atrocity not only against the United States, but all of civilized society.

Now we wait....and we wait....and we wait....

We know that something is about to happen. We attempt going on with our daily lives....occupying our minds and our bodies with "daily" thoughts and chores...going to work...mowing our lawns...running our errands and doing our grocery shopping...paying our bills...getting together with friends....attending church...playing sports...watching something on television besides the news....but still...it's always there...in the back of our minds....it lingers....

It is a cloudy and cool day here in upstate NY...a Monday where everyone is going about their day...taking care of business....and here I sit with my lunchtime bagel...the door to my office closed....not wishing to go "out" to lunch....instead sitting here taking a moment to reflect on what has happened and what is yet to come. I'm thinking of the men and women in our military....and of the people in our law enforcement and intelligence agencies such as the FBI and the CIA. Today isn't exactly "business as usual" for them...they are preparing for war...and I can't help but wonder when it will begin....what will happen first...and what the outcome will be.

Well Leggy ,,,at this point all we can do is wait,,,,, reflect on what has happened and pray to god that we will not be attacked again,,, I just heard that they grounded all the crop dusters because of the fear of chemical warfare ,,,, scary isn't it? but we can't let it control our lives ,,,,we can not be afraid ,,,we must do as our leaders suggest ,,,, go about our daily lives ,,,,,I went to the park yesterday,, it was a beautiful day and everyone was having fun roller blading,,,,playing ball,,,, bike riding,,,, playing mini golf ,,,,that is what we should be doing,,,,, we have mourned and have done all that we could have done.....it's almost like a new country we live in ,,,,never in my 38 years have I seen such a show of patriotism ,,,the way America has come together ,,,, now is the time we have to stay strong and support our president and our military,,, support the men and women that are leaving their families ,,,to fight for our great nation ,,,to fight against this evil plauge called terrorism,,,,we saw this terrible tragedy unfold in front of our eyes,,,,,we will never forget it ,,EVER,,,it will always be there,,,,, but we are Americans ,,,we are strong ,, we will not let this keep us down,,,, we will rise above this and stand together ,,,, proud and tall cause WE ARE AMERICANS ONE NATION UNDER GOD !!!!!!

I'm one of those people who happen to think that the events of Sept, 11, are only the beginning. To what, I don't really know.
The attackers have shown us Americans to be unprepared for such attacks. They have also shown us to be arrogant enough to think that "this would NEVER happen here".
I also think, however, that the attackers and those who sent them, are unprepared themselves, for the speed with which the American Law Enforcement and American Military AND the American PEOPLE have rallied to find an answer to this horrible tragedy.
I do so hope that the American resolve, so strong and so prevalent NOW, will remain strong with the passage of time and with the possible loss of life that may follow. Time alone will tell.

Leggy,

The rain is falling as I sit in my office. I just attended a Bio-Terrorism and Biological warfare lecture presented nby a Navy Commander from Fort Dietrich MD. He is an MD , with a wealth of experience and a very pragmatic approach to the events which we may experience. Bio terrorism is a very real threat, and probably not a question of if, but when. Case in point the grounding of crop dusting planes in Florida. This is a different world, and our lives will never be the same. The next issue to kick in will be the cost of increased security , not to mention the delays and what some will see as infringements on their privacy and civil rights, giving little heed to the fact that these are safety measures that we have been forced to take. We're a hardy lot, we'll recover and I assure you and all our forum members that the USA is still the best country in the world. With that said, I'll give thoughts to travelling North later in the week to enjoy the autumn splendor of the Southern Adironacks.

As Ever, Doc

I'm glad that our country is giving special attention to the threat of biological and chemical warfare at the moment, Doc....but I did hear on the news that it would be very difficult to actually load enough of either the smallpox or the anthrax viruses into a crop dusting plane to do any "real" damage...and that loading the plane itself would probably kill the culprits. I'm in WAY over my head here....and just have to hope and pray that the so-called "experts" are correct on this one. But they did say that either virus could be unleashed in a crowd...and that it could spread rapidly....and be communicated to other individuals simply by breathing on them. And when I heard that I couldn't help but think of a book I read back in high school called "The Stand" by Stephen King.

And yes...I also realize that the liberals will balk at the civil liberties infringements....but this is a time for us to band together...and realize that our world will never be quite the same as it was before.

I will be in the Adirondacks this weekend myself, Doc...who knows....perhaps we'll run into each other.

Good point brought up... with security sure to be upscaled, what civil liberties might we have to sacrifice, and what
"PRIVELAGES" will we have to give up that we've so long taken for granted as "RIGHTS" ?

I think the first thing up for grabs, chazzy....is that we are now going to be able to detain those with visas for an unspecified amount of time without even charging them with a crime....not that this will affect anyone here...

As for us...I think that we will be subjected to searches without provocation...things of that nature. But if anyone else has any ideas on this subject, I'd love to hear them.

Time for me to go...it's almost time for Bill O'Reilly's show.

Leggy,

wouldn't it be interesting to cross paths, Lol, we'll be inside the Blue Line in the largest National park in the country. In my case, just a bit west of Speculator. An unlikely place for a terrorist attack, but a wonderful area to blend into the woods, sight unseen !!.

out of curiousity....did anyone else's place of work increase their security measures since the 11th?

where i'm working now...all visitors have to show a photo id,give the name of whom they're visiting, where they work AND what floor they're on.

according to a meeting we had yesterday...this has to do with the fact that we're close to the United Nations...close to Grand Central Station AND we're a tall freakin building.

this does worry me some.....i'm very good at the 30 flight dash.....but not 73 flights...(or the 73 story drop)

don't feel there is a timetable on this effort to seek and erradicate terror.

foreboding ? a sense here? hmmm know some feel that, but somehow the feeling of doing something about this, facing it seems so much better than just taking it on the chin.

shall there be more incidents of attacks here...sure, part of life in any land where terror has an evil foothold...but at least the facing is happenning...and that is the start tyo ending it.

be well all

No increased security here, jas...but then my building is only 25 stories tall....hardly a target for a terrorist. However, Hillary Clinton is right down the street from me when she's in town...and I've heard they're taking extreme precautionary measures down there at the state capitol....since all the New Yorkers seem to want her head on a platter at the moment for insulting our president.

Is anyone else feeling just a little uncomfortable about what the retaliation will be for US? Every time I watch the news I see experts on biological warfare...and now they're scrambling to get the vaccines ready. They've beefed up security on our nation's water supplies...transportation systems....and in all of the tall office buildings. It's all rather ominous...and I can't help but feel just a little uneasy....

aprreicate you point of view ... just not a yes man, unless i believe it.

be well be safe ..and i do agree, there will be some ugliness well before any peace of a lasting variety arrives. one just has to look at the hotspots of terror in the world such as the mideast or ireland ...how long has terror been in those spots?

yeah, be aware, be scared, and steel yourself to the reality coming. and let's save our energy for dealing with that and for the resolve to stay the course.

Been feeling unrest and uncomfy since Sun. Listening to NCR these days, and can't help but feel acute awareness of the situation. One way that helped was working lots. It was good to be with clients, forgetting all that was happening in the world during those hours. I felt my clients deserved the best attention ever, especially for being bold in proceeding in their investment plans. Today I learned there may be a plan initiated to reward the few, proud and brave investors with immediate tax credits for not "waiting" thus helping the economy stay afloat. Sorry, if this post sounds so "economy minded", but along with everything else, it is also a matter of concern. Getting lots of calls from ppl being laid off or having schedules cut

The anthrax situation is bizarre; the fact that it's occuring in Florida, where much of family now resides is another issue of personal concern. The most surprising feeling these days, is of wanting to be near my family, and so have committed myself to flying myself and my son to florida this winter for a longer than usual holiday visit. No matter how close I feel to my wonderful group of friends where I live, it's my family I think about and miss during these days. Almost wishing I lived near them now. Can't help but appreciate the unconditional love I have received my entire lifetime, and how it's just always been taken for granted. I guess I want to be close to them, just so they know, how much I really love them and appreciate all their goodness through the years.

I am thinking of this winter also, where so many may be in need of counseling for depression. I have worked as a Suicide Prevention Center counselor/volunteer in the past, and will again serve in this way; hoping I can be of some comfort to those feeling despondant throughout the Holiday Season. I am very conscious of upholding a positive attitude, continuing with my life as usual, but underneath it all, I do feel uneasy, and it takes a bit more effort to stay "funloving". However, more than ever I am trusting in our great leaders, and in this wonderful country. God Bless Beautiful America!

And, finally, I must express my appreciation for friends on chat and here on the forum. Brings me a sense of affinity, knowing you are here, for frivolity and more, 24/7. //heart to all of you. God Bless!!!

As I sit and watch the events happening half a world away, I wonder what will become of the people we know.
As a father of a son who is currently in Basic Training in the Army National Guard, I can't help but think how much HIS life has changed already. He originally joined the National Guard with the hopes of gaining some new experiences, learning some new things, playing with some very cool toys, and going to college. Instead he is training to learn how to protect his country, whether it is moving rocks in some disaster area, helping the disadvantaged, or being where the action is (or might be). The choice to join the military was HIS, long before the events of early September.
What will HIS future be NOW? Only GOD knows.
I'm happy for him and proud of him.

Going to post a reflective thought now. Wondered why I don't feel a prevading fear of germ warfare, anthrax, etc. Years ago, I would have held a lot of anxiety, so I have prayed how to respond to the probable fear in some hearts at this time on the Forum group.

Maybe cause I lived in fear so much of my life, this is just one more stimulus I have to ignore.

So! What can I say to anyone here who might have anxious moments, heart lurchings (as I used to have), anxious thoughts, fear for our safety in this country? Can I assure you all, that we will not suffer from retaliation? Of Course not!! Is it possible to 'pretend' that we will not ever have violence if only mankind would improve itself, become more loving, act more mature, and if we were more intelligent we would not ever exercise violence? How absurd!! History is replete with wars and battles on planet earth.

I do know that when an aggressor strikes without cause and the victim doesn't say NO, the aggressor continues to attack! Was the story in my marriage, only one small microcosm of this bigger picture we see today!! As long as I was cowed and passive, my walls, the walls of integrity as a child of God were attacked, until I despaired of even life. Wrong is wrong! It must be resisted!

My deepest wish for you all is that you find peace with the bigger picture, one that is not understood completely even by the biggest minds on earth, but one that can bring to you all some sense of security apart from the threats we face now. So, I offer you (no preaching ok?) a psalm from King David that warms my heart every time I read it.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd
I shall not want
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters;
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness, for His name's sake
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil
For Thou art with me
Thy Rod and Thy staff they comfort me
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies
Thou anointest my head with oil
My cup runneth over;
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD, forever. Amen

May these words bring peace to those who read them, I pray.

The one thing we have to realize is that we're now more aware of what's going on in regards to terrorism.
There have been two incidents regarding disturbances on planes and both times it was the PASSENGERS that subdued the attacker, where as before people were willing to sit there and let the hijacker control the situation.

And don't forget, now our intelligence has all shackles off....they're free to pursue any information by any means...that's how they've detained over 600 people in regards to the Sept 11th attack....and many of them are material witnesses...meaning they're giving information.

For all we know, they could be planning to trap whatever sleepers are out by not giving us details on what they know (which would be foolish to do considering the circumstances).

And as for the Anthrax scare in Florida...it seems like it's a disgruntled worker...why would a terrorist use anthrax on a tabloid office (unless bin Laden didn't like the Sun's story on him having a small penis and an American girl laughing at him)?

Right now the United States and her allies are on a heightened level of security....while it may be possible something can happen....we as Americans will make it hard for them to do anything.

now and beyond it is so important that we continue to live normal lives...to risk as we would had nothing happenned... or else we have lost, to some degree.

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool.

To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out for another is to risk involvement.

To expose feelings is to risk rejection.

To place your dreams before the crowd is to risk ridicule.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To go forward in the face of overwhelming odds is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or love.
Chained by his certitudes, he is a slave.

He has forfeited his freedom.

Only a person who takes risks is free.
