I consider a spy to be basically non-violent unless in self-defense or unless there is someone, usually a guard, 'in the way'.
They can be hired to collect information, and probably have quite a bit of technical knowledge.(how to hack into systems, break into things etc..) .. that most others wouldn't know. They would be lightly armed so as to remain quiet and unobtrusive, but what weapons they do have would probably be quiet and powerful enought at least to stun.
Unfortunately the need of a spy won't be at it's peak until the Rebels get back to Tanari and Venhydra organizes themself. But after that I expect they will need spies to go in and check out the opposition's situation.
So I would say, when it comes around, your job will basically be to either go undercover to the opposing side, or to go use stealth and get in for info without them noticing.
Hmm.. does that sound clear...I sometimes ramble on without making any sense..
