Actually, dear Tova, reading Yiddish in Hebrew letters is really simple once you get used to it. Unlike Hebrew, where you actually need to know the language to be able to read without vowels, Yiddish is quite phonetical. If you already know the Hebrew alphabet, just pay attention to this few adjustments and you'll be in bussiness here:
אָ -- Kometz alef is always "oh" (as in Ashkenazic Hebrew_
אַ -- patach alef is always "ah"
ò -- Ayin is actually a vowel in Yiddish, sound like the second "e" in PetEr.
The yud é is usually Y or I
Now, it is a little tricky here: the double yud ײ may be either ay or ey -- you'll get used to telling them appart!
One vav å in the middle of a word usually has an"oo"sound. If you do want a "v" sound, you use a double vav װ. The "oy" -- how could Yiddish exist without it! -- is simply a vav and a yud together: ױ .
Everything else is pretty much the same -- ôאַøùèײñè ?
