I recall the thinking was that Player Reps would fit best at a REGIONAL level... ie. it would be best for each Region to elect Player Reps so that the views of the players get direct representation at a Regional level... At this level Regional Reps will have much greater potential for effectively soliciting and representing the opinions of their players... and if the opportunity (or need) arose for Player Reps to effectively solicit and represent a nationwide cosensus of the views of players (if that is at all possible), the positions could be reinstated at a national Board level.

I don't think the issue was at all 'cost'... merely the 'effectiveness' of the representation!

After all, the positions were created in contemplation that one day (oh to be so fortunate!) there may be no direct representation from active players on the Board - ie only retired players or 'professional' adminstrators.
As this is far from the case (and somewhat unlikely in the medium future), it seemed unnecessary to appoint people in these roles.
Furthermore, it was difficult at the time to maintain the commitment of some people elected in these roles, and it was just creating more headaches establishing sufficient quorums at Board meetings to make legitimate decisions...

So it was thought that the Regional level was the place for that type of representation [I don't know that any Regions pursued this idea and established representatives in these roles - which makes me wonder if they are actually necessary at all!]....

I can't recall exactly what was done to 'legitimately' "extinguish" the position but I note:
- the Constitution 'requires / allows' Player Representatives to be elected according to the Assn's Policies
- rather than change the Constitution, the Board could merely change/ interpret policy to allow for these reps not to be elected from time to time... what actually came of this, I can't confirm...

Personally, I recommend Bec's suggestions - to put energy into reinforcing other lines of communication and representation - before reinstating another burden of representatives on the Assn... they might never be needed!

I certainly question the validity of having Player Reps at a national Board level - other representatives can (or should) be seen to be more accountable, with a transparent relationship between the representative and the body of participants they are representating
... in contrast it is difficult to hold national player reps accountable and they can quite easily be left to represent themselves and the small minority of players they associate with - that is fine, as long as it is appreciated when they are elected that these player reps will effectively be making their own 'conscience votes' on any decision.

PS Bec's, we once had the policies on the website... are there plans to bring them back?
