It was quite easy in the end...

Firstly I cut off the spade end on on the wire to make it easyer to pass through the small gaps. Then push it up through the hole and then wiggle it out between the support strut and the outer boot lid. Once the wire is free it is easy to feed it around the edge of the boot pushing it under the struts with a small screw driver.
To make the final bit easyer I removed the boot clasp andd rear light housing and fiddly pushed the wire out of its final hole and repaced all the bits. It didn't take more than a few minutes once I'd got it between the strut and the lid.
