Subject: The closing of the Site...

Ok I got the email you have all read last night and posted it right away because I wasn't sure how long he meant by ASAP and in case it went down the next day I didn't want you all wondering what happened.

Well here's the deal the site will have to move to survive now here's the problem the thought of moving close to 5,000 files and more to a new host fill me with dread especially since the memory of the last move is still horribly incased in my brain. And the dread increases since the site has grown a lot since a year and a half ago.

So what to do, well I have no money to pay for a new host and the chances of finding a host as dirt cheap and as reliable as this one, well it doesn't look good right now especially since its such short notice to do such a thing. Plus it would make sense to completely redo the site in a manner that would make moving and reading pages more efficient.

So instead of having 5,000+ individual html files those files would be stored in a database meaning an much easier upload. ASP would be my first choice since I know the language really well and I have Microsoft Access at home. But the bandwidth for ASP is expensive and there the no money thing on my part.

PHP is another language which is much cheaper only I've haven't learned how to use it and I've been putting it off for some time, I'd have to go buy a book and start playing with the language and put the stories in the database and write the pages so you all can view them.
All of these options take lots of time since I'm only one person and theres the money thing again.

So here is what I'm going to do as of right now, I will be slowly moving the finished fic's and I stress this only the finished fic's to one of those free servers the ones with the limited bandwidth and the ads so I shall believe in some form stays on the net as I continue to explore my options. Only 2 ongoing fics will be put up Incognito's Core cause I can't bear to see that fic disappear and Tazno's In Your Eyes the sequel because she has been really good at updating her fic regularly even though I haven't been as fast putting them up.

My fic's will be going to a whole different smaller host for those interested in reading them. Both hosts will be unreliable if the traffic is heavy I'm sorry for that.

The links to both will be posted on this board for anyone still interested.

That's the situation and it hit me just as hard as you I was so not expecting this but I guess I should have when the page has been going down allot for long periods of time. Again I'm sorry.

About how much bandwidth does this site usually take up?

On average the site uses close to 5 Giga Bytes a month with the number increasing with the bigger the site grows.

Well the old host did come threw for us, he moved my domain name to new server, this server costs about the same as the old one and it handles ASP it's my dream come true. The First few months are going to be on credit a deal the old host worked out with the new.

But everything was lost so since I refuse to upload 5,000+ files guess what your trully will be doing for some time now. Moving all the text into a database. So when the site does come back fully I'm sure many of you will wonder what the big deal is since it looks the same but trust me the behind the scene things will be much different.

Hey, Faith =) Just wanted to comment on how much I LOVED this site, and how sad I am that it's closed. =( I only had a chance to read about half?? of the fics that were posted here...since it was just a couple weeks ago that I found the site. I was browsing fanfic awards at Fanatics, and one of Breathless' stories was linked here. It's really weird, cuz I've been reading fanfic for a long time (and I mean TONS of it), and I remember seeing links to "ishalbelieve" before -- but they never worked -- so eventually gave up, assuming the site had "died" with the show, or something. I was pretty surprised when the link on Fanatics did work...and loving fanfic the way I do =D...I started going through stories on your site like crazy!! lol In fact, even yesterday afternoon, I was able to get in and read some of them -- but I was SO hoping to get through the rest before the site disappeared. =( Most of the stories I saw on there, I hadn't found ANYWHERE else...which is saying something...cuz after you've visited so many fanfic sites, you just pretty much start seeing the same stuff over and over and over. lol

That said, I'm sort of confused about exactly what's happening -- where the fics "went," which ones will be on the new site, which ones won't, and why, etc. Sorry, you've probably tried to make that clear, already...I'm just VERY computer "illerate," when it comes to this kind of thing! lol I mean, if everything was "lost" from the old site -- then how can it be uploaded again? Where is it now? The link is still the same, so will we know when it's actually available -- meaning when it takes us to the new site, and not the current "dead end"? I think you've mentioned that the "in progress" fics won't be on the new site, for the most part -- do you happen to know of anywhere else that those fics are posted/being updated?? There was one story, "Sexual Education," that I thought was hilarious...and really had fun reading. I think maybe it was by Anais Nin? I can't remember if her(his?) e-mail was posted on the old site, but I'd love to tell her how much I liked the story -- as well as find out if it's still being updated anywhere?

Phew! Ok, sorry about the long post! Thank you *SO* much for all your efforts in maintaining the site!! =) It was honestly one of the best IMO. Even though I didn't get to spend much time on it...95% of the other fan fic sites I've been to, didn't compare to this one. =)

You know when you move to a new house say you want to keep your old phone number from that house. So the phone company does some magic and you keep your phone number despite living in a new house.

That is what happened my old house closed but my name www.ishallbelieveinml.com was moved to new home. So the link is automatically redirected to this new home. But all the files in the old house didn't come with the name. They all burned down when the old house went bye bye.

So where are all those files well they are on my computer sitting there taking up a lot of space. I could upload them to the house but that will take up to much time cause we are talking about 5,000+ differnt story chapters. Sorry not going to put myself threw that.

So all those chapters will be put into a database and I will write the code that will make possible for all you to see it. You don't have to worry about that code. When its up it will look no different then it did before but the behind the scenes will look very differnt.

The site will go up in stages first the completed fics will go up and the stories no longer being updated will be moved to the dead and dying part of the page which is still up thats on a free server to better save bandwidth on the main site.

All this will take lots of time to happen that can't be helped make just a little more sense.

As for the author your are looking for she posts her stories on www.roswellfanfic.com when ever they come back online then you'll see it there.

Thanks for the explaination! =) I think I understand better now. =) So, really, all the stories are "safe and sound"...on your computer...but it's just going to take some time, for everything to get moved into your new "house," right? At least maybe we can read them again, at some point -- not like if they'd been "lost" forever! =)

No nothing has been lost forever, its all sitting on my computer safe and sound taking up loads of space.

Once I completly redesign the site if this were to happen again the page will be up in no time. But this time to continue the house analogy. The only thing working is the phone, the house is empty and its waiting for the furniture to arrive to make it just as nice as the old house if not better.

I already started writting code today it went well, but its still boring long work.

that sucks that it's taking up so much room on your computer. =( I guess there's no way anyone can help you out with this? I would, if I could... I know there are TONS of people who loved this site, and are really missing it. I feel bad that ONE person has to do all the work, themselves...when so many of us were enjoying it. =( I suppose it would require a network, before any of the files could been taken off of your computer, and put on another? And maybe the same story for coding the site? I have no idea, of course, like I said before...terrible lack of knowledge about this stuff! =( Anyway, I can tell you that I appreciate all your work, personally -- and that there are lots and lots of other Roswellians who feel the same!

I was just checking to see how goes getting the new site up. I know it's going to be awhile I was just checking to see if you think you would have it up within the next few months or do you think it will be longer?
