Force will never win war on terrorism

In response to "Bush: We're winning, we will win" (Sept. 1):By misspeaking, the president finally got it right: The war on terror is unwinnable, at least by violent force.

Terrorism will be eliminated only when the hopelessness that creates and sustains terrorists is eliminated -- a hopelessness fueled by economic, political and religious oppression.

You can't kill every terrorist, but you can work peacefully to correct the conditions that make them want to kill you. Violent suppression, while possibly satisfying short-term, serves only to create an endless supply of more dedicated warriors against you.
