5 Months lost, tabby makes it home

Cat survives car crash, then Florida's gators, and returns to Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Thirteen-year-old Ray Juarez keeps a crutch close at hand, and after 10 surgeries, he still needs bone grafts because his broken ankle and arm aren't healing.

But at least a gator didn't get Flirt.

After nearly five months lost in Florida, the orange tabby cat made it home for Christmas.

On July 22, Ray and three family members were in a traffic accident on Interstate 75 near Lake City, Fla. Ray and his brother, Brian Lambert, 16, were badly injured.

Flirt, whose cat carrier was ejected from the car, disappeared.

In the first few days after the wreck, Ray's mother, Toni Lambert, didn't give Flirt much thought; after all, her sons were hospitalized.

But Ray "kept asking for her," she said.

A family friend, Terri Rayne, helped Toni Lambert look for the cat, knocking on doors and distributing fliers near the wooded area where the wreck occurred.

Close to Thanksgiving, Betty Reader, who lives near Lake City, saw a thin, scraggly cat near her home for days.

At first, she could not get the animal to come to her. But eventually she got veterinary care for the injured cat.

"I cut the collar off, and my daughter called the numbers on the tag."

"My daughter talked to the woman," Reader said. "She said she just started crying."

On Monday, at the family's south Fort Worth apartment, Ray's crutch was propped against the wall in one room. In another room, he lay on the floor, stroking Flirt.

"I decided that if she could make it, so could I," he said.

For Toni Lambert, Flirt's return completes a circle broken by the accident.

"It means everybody got through, and everybody is back home," she said.
