The taste for age is sudden.
Coming to the garden that day
I knew myself willing to venture
farther and smaller, colder,
down past torrential rows
of an overbearing prime.

The abundance of youth is abandoned;
sweet swellings and moist ripened fruits
will never consent to the sacks I choose
or share the secrets they claim to contain.

Provisionless, then, I might face
famine and hardship; but neither
has found me, no. Cultivated, this age
feeds on spirit flesh and plant that knows
no deterioration, fosters no incapacity,
averts every denouncement of time.

I feast sweetly and often, for my
nourishment thrives without moisture;
it has forsaken all tears of tempestuous strength
that ever deluged the gardens of youth.
