No Path

I ask; you are no path
from wilderness,

no wound track or plotting elevation
led down below some pressured rocky ridge.

Feet do not fall on you, however lightly;
you lead me nowhere from the place

where needles fold the ground, a place
the air is cold and pure, and vistas wide.

Left here to my own devices, a follow-me
of clearing never deigns to speak my name.

Because of this I barely stir,
as though with you and no direction,

I can forego the choice to stay.
Because of you, I am reprieved

to wilderness. Just as
I ask, you are no path.
