Sonnet for a Teenage Daughter

Come, take the stage. Your role, forever new,
Rehearses love, enamoured of the truth.
To learn that drama's dues to love are few,
Experience! and suffer for your youth.
A smile or frown in mask is cleanly etched
Above the actor's ever hidden face,
Emotions run; some deep, some lightly sketched
Beneath facades of nothing out of place.
Though guises in affairs may seem so clear
And players well prepared before the role
For stage to be a path down which to steer
Toward happy ever after at its close,
You must remember. Players memorize.
Their words, as heard, may not speak from their eyes.
