Sacred to the memory of Amie Rebecca Hall
...I will compose these words
beloved wife of Joseph McKinnon Gwinnett
...unwilling to be carved in stone
of Sunbury Town in St. John's Parish
...for the harsh sun of a thousand summers
within the Province of Georgia
...and winds of grave storms and torrents
whose mortal remains rest at this spot
...to stir the voice of my grief
She was in all her ways
...accepting this lot of solitude
a Devout and Obedient Christian
...and attending as well as may be
given to good works and kindly nature toward all
...mayhap no one will see that I am lost
Born Dorchester, South Carolina April 12, 1756
...she felt the fading of light
and died Sunbury, Georgia October 21, 1778
...from the son of whom we dreamt together
in the twenty second year of her age
...and though we once and freely loved
four days past the birth of her firstborn child
...there is nought but sorrow left in my heart
For blessed are those who die in the Lord
...on this bleak and desperate day
