Knowing Reluctance to Touch

There are ways they begin
to forgive, though their souls
are bound into bundles, inflamed

like a martyr’s hands. They burn
for the blessing of tears, obligations assumed
for that which was never explained.

It is the plight of poets and saints
to make eternal work
of the craving for grace,

to take as their only recompense
the cooling touch of love
upon the ache in our hearts.

Sorrow climbs high as the flames
between ground and sky. Overwhelmed,
they forgive our reluctance to touch,

knowing an end so bright
must be earned,
to be borne by them.
