Unwilling

There are strange inflections in your voice.
I hear the sadness of processions in winter,

of fields of ravaged grasses
in the aftermath of storms.

Your eyes, once wide,
have danced and leapt their last

in the throes of past passions.
They have become stark, like tragedies

lacking the spark of animation.
They miss your happier days.

I know these things without asking, yet
would contradict cause, effect,

the futility of evasive tactics,
the surety of no other way;

would urge you consoled by grief
and revived in the breath I convey.

As you reject this offering
borne of the eternal magic of two,

you must spare me such complaisance. I will not
turn sight to the point of disbelief.

I will not lower my voice in dejected state.
I will never conspire in shame.
