This argument can broken down to Genes vs. Breeders. Both play an important part in the formation of a particular line or family. Over the course of time breeders are the most important in the formation of a particular family. You can start with two littermates and breed them to different dogs and over the course of 30 or so years have dogs with very different traits and genetic variances. Let's take breeder A who isn't a performance breeder and just sells dogs to pet owners. Breeder A doesn't have a standard of testing, culling and matching dogs. After two or three generations of breeding this way the quality(performance wise)of the dogs drop considerably. The pet owners who bought the dogs from breeder A bred to other dogs in which the same non performance standards were practiced. Now over the course of let's say 30 years what is the quality of the dogs you have now, performance wise? Breeder B starts off with the same stock as Breeder A. Breeder B tests, culls and matches his stock only breeding the best examples. Nothing is peddled or sent to pet owners. Fast forward 30 years the performance of the original dogs is upgraded because of Breeder A's methods. Do you think Breeder B's dogs will be better or worse than Breeder A's dogs? When you look at Breeder A's pedigrees you see atleast a half a dozen names in the first 3 generations. Each different breeder breeding to non performance standards. Each breeder breeding their own interpetation or their way. After 30 years you have a half a dozen different breeding paths, still with no common standard of performance. Now Breeder B has controlled his stock for 30 years. Every dog that appears in his pedigrees is either a game dog, winner or champion. The only standard the dogs were bred to was performance. In creating a family or line of dogs the human element(breeder) is the most important especially over the course of time. A breeder can create a human manipulation of Darwinism, the strongest and fittest only survive. Craeting better dogs that was oriiginaly started with.
