This post is not to bash anything T.D. has written but what was written by T.D. seems misleading.

Today very few old inbred familys produce match quality dogs. They lack one or more traits necessary to compete with today's dogs. By breeding to an inbred family will not be enough to restore traits another family has lost. Some vigor will come about but will not be enough to overcome the average of both familys.

When breeding you're not only breeding to a single dog but also to his or her immediate ancestors(littermates,brothers,sisters,1/2 brothers,1/2 sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and etc.). Alot of people don't like peds online but I find it as a very valuable tool in breeding. You can see offspring and various titles(Gr.Ch.,Ch.,1xw,ROM,POR and etc.).

If you have an old inbred family, championship vigor has to be added and even better yet championship ROM vigor. Why ROM because it shows the dog can produce. It is a bonus if the dog when inbred produces just as well. If you can't find a particular family that produces well a three way performance cross may be necessary.

Today's dogs have evolved to the point where even alot of match quality dogs 40 or 50 years ago might not make the cut today. For quite some time now there has been a trend of breeding hard mouth match dogs with just enough gameness to win where before gameness was the number one priority. This is the main reason why old inbred familys don't see the winner's circle on a consistent basis nowadays.
